105.7 Wapl & the Oshkosh Northwestern Kick off the 2006 season!

Opening night at the Speedzone started off with the normal rush and first night bugs. The grand opening ceremonies kicked off the night with 100 plus cars taking to the track for our national anthem in a 5 wide formation as bombs busted in air.  This brought back a lot of memories for this writer, web designer!  As the night went on some of the opening night bugs tried hard to spoil the show.  As an evil cruel east wind blew in, temperatures dropped.  This dry wind played havoc with fans, and the track too.  I've never seen the wind suck the moisture out of a track like it did...

Despite the opening night jitters, The fans that braved the cold seen some great races.  I heard some fans asking if it was a full moon.  The races were quite aggressive and many racers went over the edge when it came to driving.   Although, there was just enough cars to give fans a taste of what is to come.  The Coors Light Dirt Devils ran their feature first, it was red flagged when # 54k put his Coors Light Dirt Devil on it's roof.  When the race resumed it was Ron Paulick Jr. #20 of Oshkosh who went on to win the Coors Light Dirt Devil feature as the yellow / checkers were thrown from the flagman for another caution & time limit. The New Total Power Sales Hobby Stock Division was next in the feature line up...  the new division ran a clean race and was won by Marshall Nullenix #51m with Gregg and Paul Steffens finishing second and third.

The American Auto Street Stocks took to the for their 20 lap feature with the wind & cold nipping at their toes. While the diehard fans in the stands drank a record number of Hot Chocolates.  The race ran Green to Checker and when the dust settled it was Scott Solomon #33s making the trip to Victory Lane and taking home some iron! Gary Neau #07 held on for second holding off David Hoerning #19 who came home third.

When the Miller Light Grand National took to the track It was Tim Doehling that found the clay with bite and her ran off with the race once he was out front. Tim Moore finished 2nd just ahead of Terry Van Roy in the #09 Jeanne's Bar car.

It was getting quite late by the time the Budweiser Modifieds hit the track.  The race had to be Red Flagged after a chain reaction type crash happened in turn 3 leaving Brian Drexler and his #8 modified flipping and landing in a pile of twisted & bent metal.  Brian was reported to have been alright.  When the action got under way again it was Mike Wedelstadt that took home the win...  With Benjamin Brinkman holding on to 2nd followed by Jay Schaufnagel and Oshkosh's Dennis Schultz came home in forth after a strong showing in his heat race.

If I were to have to give and opinion on the opening night... I would have to say the new promoters did one heck of a job putting the season together with the amount of time they had to do it.  They seem to be fan & racer friendly and are trying to make everyone happy, yet still keep8ing the operation solvent.  I seen many good signs that to me show that they are in this for the long haul and that they take pride in Winnebago County & the Racing facility they have been in-trusted to operate. Sure some things didn't go off like clock work... But it is refreshing to see them paying attention to every little detail, right down to having Flowers once again planted in the flower beds.  I think the fans and racers are in for a great season... I hope you all will continue to give your support to Impact Motorsports as they continue to improve and fine tune your racing experience at the Oshkosh Speedzone!
