Week Two Proves to be a Chilly & Tacky Night !

The Speedzone paid tribute to fallen racer Tim Montonati in the opening ceremonies. We all lost a young friend and competitor to a tragic traffic accident.  His family and friends were on hand with his racecar to keep his memory alive.  The fans that didn't listen to the weather men, seen one heck of a show.  The track was tacky and dust free, it found the weak link in quite a few cars.  I seen at least 6 drive shafts let go ending some great runs for some of the drivers.  I never seen the track this tacky at the zone, it wanted to suck your shoes off when you walked on it.

With such a tacky track... it was a given that ruts would develop in the corners which they did.  After the races I talked to Jerry Kope #4k  3 time Street Stock Track Champion.   His comment on the ruts was, "It's normal at this point in the season, it will only make for a great track in weeks to come!  It's what the track needed!" Jerry battled with Dave Averkamp in the feature, where Dave held on for the win.   It was refreshing to see 3 & 4 wide racing again at the zone!  It really makes for great racing and keeps the fans on the edge of their seat.  As the heat races were run the clouds broke and it actually got quite nice out.  From the infield I could hear Bob Burnell calling off driver names and  car numbers. It's funny the things that happen on opening night, like stranding your announcer without needed information ;-)

The American Auto Street Stocks once again put on one heck of a show.  It was not for the lack of effort, that kept Jerry Kope #4k from winning his first feature of the year.  Jerry tried high and low to get past Dave Averkamp for the win... Although, Dave held Jerry off for the win, but it was quite a nail biter for both of their cheering sections.

Early in the night it looked as if Tommy Moore was going to run away with the night in the Miller Lite Grand Nationals!  Tommy pounded the field in his heat race and look untouchable.  But, this is racing and anything can happen.  When the feature started Dion Wahl #77 worked his way to the front with Tim Doehling #5 hot on this trail. Suddenly there was a mishap on the back stretch, it caused Tim to collect Dion, sending Tim into the wall ending the night him.  After the restart and with time running out, Brian Gerber snatched the lead away from Tommy Moore...  quite a battle was going on when yet another caution came out, only this time it was a yellow & checkers  caution giving the win to Brian Gerber.  Tommy held on for 2nd and Terry Van Roy # 09 came home third.

The Budweiser Modifids took to the track, where Nick Woods  # 1x quickly jumped out front.  The track was still so tacky Nick hardly lifted, well at least not on the gas.  He powered his way around the track lifting the left front tire nearly the entire time.  It was quite impressive, however it was short lived as something had to give!  What gave was his drive shaft ending the race for him.  Nicks bad luck opened the door once again for Jay Schaufnagel #10s as he went on to win the feature. Kelly Brown held on to second with Dave Diemel #12d grabbing third, just ahead of Scott Lewis #6.

The Coors Light Dirt Devils nearly had a full field with 14 cars starting the feature.  Some Racers that dominated last week did not show up in the front this week.  Loren Rangeloff #24 ran away with the race in his yellow Neon. Bob Fahser took second and Chad Weidemann #4w came home third.

The Total Power Hobby Stocks added a new car to the field this week.  I'm sure this division will continue to grow as the season goes on.  It was Marshall T Mullennix #51 taking home the Iron with his feature win. The #1v of Shane Van Handel closed the night out... when his hood flew up as he took the checkered flags...
