A Hot, Sticky, Night of Racing...

The night was kicked off by a fleet of Cornwell Tools Vendors... One of the sponsors of the race.  It was quite impressive to see their rigs all out on the track at once. With the Mercury in the mid 90's the programs got a real work out as the fans used them as fans...  I could see 100's of the waving up in the stands. As the racing got underway it seemed that the drivers got over the wild driving of the past race.  Fans seen a lot of good racing with minimal cautions.

With the points races close in nearly every division, winning heat races is almost as important as winning Features.  And we all seen some great battles for those heat wins. Before the features started it was decided to try and have the graders skim the track to smoothen it out.  The grader operators just seemed to miss calculate how long it would take them. But all in all, when it was done the track was smooth and fast for a while.  When the Miller Lite Grand National took to the track for their feature it looked like a new comer was going to run away with the race. Then late in the race he broke opening the door for Dan Wirl who went on to win, with Dion Wahl hot on his tail. Terry Van Roy came home third to stay consistent to hold on to the points lead.

When the Budweiser Mods took to the track it looked like the Schultz Bros. race team of Oshkosh had everything dialed in.  Dennis Schultz drove a hard race, looking to make it 3 feature wins in a row.  But it was not to be, as Eric Mullen #7 held on along the bottom. He was not to be denied his first ever feature win. Which left Dennis Schultz  #39 with a second, his son John was right behind him for third.

The Coors Light Dirt Devils ran a good clean race. It looked as if Loren #24 was going to run away with another feature win. Then in a puff of smoke and oil, Loren limped his Yellow Neon off the track. This opened the door for Dave Wilkins in his #222 Purple Monster to motor to the win. He was followed by Chad Weidemann in his #4 Green Fireball for second to hold on to his points lead of just 3 points. Justin Struck hung in for third followed by Ron Paulick Jr. in the #20

The Total Power Hobby Stocks ran a good race... it turned out to be the Steffens's Show again this week, with the Steffens Brothers taking First and Second with Paul taking the win.  Paul told me he was thinking of not coming to race, as him and his wife were expecting a new baby at any time.  He further said, Now I'm glad I did!  Rob Dollevet In the #7 snatched up third.

By the time the Street Stocks took to the track for the feature one would have thought the track would have dried out a little. But that was not the case. With windshields packed with mud and drivers running out of tear offs, the race was impacted by visibility.  But Dave Averkamp #28 found a way to get the job done winning his 2nd feature of the season.  He was followed by Steven Gawaresky #18 for second. To the surprise of many... Mark Schultz #70 came home third!  Many didn't expect to see the 1970 Chevelle back so soon after the heavy damage from the past night of racing.

This week fan will get to see the WDLMA late Models at the Zone.  We want to thank Seubert Calf Ranches for the adding a chunk of change to the purse for the race.  The late models will be racing for $1600.00 to Win and the pay was bumped up all the way to 20th place.  So Bring some friends... this week for a great late model show!
