Dominating
Performances Rule the Night
Dave Buss
Dominoes Pizza night at the Oshkosh Speedzone Raceway would
run a quick pace sending people home early enough to order a
pizza. The drivers put on a solid showing and for the most
part made it a great night of racing. In the end, we would
watch three of the four features end with dominating
performances by the eventual winners.
The Total Power Sales Street Stocks took the track for the
first feature of the night with David Hoerning showing the
point subbing for Kevin Hebbie in the 19x. Hoerning, the
former pilot of the 19x, made himself comfortable from the
start grabbing an early lead. Hoerning would catch the back of
the pack in no time but that would be the only traffic he
would see until caution came out on lap 10. Hoerning wasted
little time taking command of the race once again on the
restart. Hoerning picked up the win with Brian Drexler, Mike
Nehmer, Shawn Haydon, and Jerry Kope rounding out the top
five.
The Modifieds were next to take the track and early on it
would be the caution flag flying more than the green. An 5 car
melee on lap 5 would be the last caution of the night for the
Modifieds much to the delight of Jim Zdroik. Zdroik would lead
from lap six until the checkered flag flew holding off the
valiant efforts of Mike Klenz. Klenz tried every angle to get
around Zdroik to no avail. Jay Schruafnagel and Mike Mullen
rounded out the top four with Mullen coming from the back of
the pack.
The Miller Lite Grand Nationals took the track with a smaller
field than started the night due to an incident in the heat
races that ended the night of four cars. Tim Doehling would
take the lead on lap five and hold it until a lap seven
restart when Terry Van Roy would dive to the inside grabbing
the lead. Doehling would have none of that taking the point
position right back. Despite the effort of Van Roy, Doehling
started to expand his lead and by lap fifteen he had a
commanding lead and he would cruise to the victory. Van Roy
would come home second with Jason Fish and Troy Weich taking
third and fourth. For Fish and Weich it would cap a great
recovery from an incident earlier in the event that put them
at the back of the pack.
The Lynn’s Service Center Dirt Devils complete the
evening’s racing with a race that featured a great three way
battle for the win. Tyler Kontos would look like the car to
beat as he held off numerous assaults from Eddie LeMay and
Cory Wegner. On lap fifteen, LeMay, Kontos and Wegner would be
packed tightly together and it would be LeMay who came out on
top. LeMay would dominate the final eight laps to pick up the
feature win. Kontos would hold on to second, Tim Sheppard made
a move late to pick up third with Mark Krause fourth and Tyler
Lind fifth.
