BRINKMAN AND SHEPPARD DOMINATE; DOEHLING AND KOPE
WIN CLOSE BATTLES
By Scott Owen
Oshkosh,WI,8/22/08--WAPL rocked the "Zone" as a
large crowd turned out for fan appreciation night.
Benjamin Brinkman, Tim Doehling, Jerry Kope, and Tim
Sheppard picked up feature wins on a perfect night for
racing. The track was fast and smooth all night long
and provided some great finishes.
Benjamin Brinkman had his RaceTech chassis dialed in, as he
led the entire modified feature. The action behind
Brinkman, though was fast and furious. Jamie
Schmidt, and Brian Drexler raced side by side on numerous
laps in the battle for second. With Schmidt
eventually beating Drexler. Mike Klenz finished
in the fourth spot. Mike Mueller finished fifth
after starting in the sixteenth spot.
The Miller Lite Grand National feature was a real crowd
pleaser. Dion Wahl grabbed the lead early on in
the race. Wahl Awas quickly pressured by Don
Schumacher. Schumacher used the outside line to take
the lead. Nick Schumacher and Tim Doehling soon
joined Don Schumacher at the front of the field. Don
Schumacher ran a great race, holding off Nick
Schumacher and Doehling who each made numerous attempts
to take the lead away. With two laps remaining, the
front three cars went three wide for the lead. Tim
Doehling was able to take the top spot. Doehling then
had to hold off Nick Schumacher, as they went door to
door to the checkered flag. Doehling won by a
nose over Nick Schumacher. Don Schumacher held on
to finish in third. Troy Weich held off Brian Henry to
finish in fourth.
Brandon Paitrick looked to be the one to beat in the
Total Power Sales Street Stock feature. Jeff
Jungwirth, Brian Drexler, Jerry Winkler, Jerry Kope,
and Mike Nehmer battled behind Paitrick. After a
roll over by Dan Knaus, Paitrick was unable to refire his
car and had to retire to the pits. Jeff Jungwirth then
took the top spot. Another yellow flag bunched the
field together. Jerry Kope moved into second
and soon took the lead from Jungwirth. Drexler
then moved into second and tried to find a way around
Kope. On the final lap Kope and Drexler ran side
by side. At the line Kope took the win over Drexler.
Todd Zimmerman finished strong in third place.
Jungwirth held on to finish in fourth. Nehmer
came from the back of the pack after a caution to finish
fifth.
The Lynn's Service Center Dirt Devils ran the final race of
the night. Tyler Kontos led the first few laps before
he was passed by Dave Wilkins. Wilkins held the lead
until lap five when Tim Sheppard made the pass for the lead.
Sheppard would go on to run away with the win. Wilkins
took second, Kontos third.
