McDermid, Parker Take Home Oshkosh Wins

Oshkosh , WI Julie McDermid swept around early race leader Eric Scribner and then held off the challenges of Mike Wedelstadt to win the 20-lap modified feature at the Oshkosh Speedzone Raceway Friday night.
The victory for McDermid was her second this week.  She beat Wedelstadt at the Seymour Speedway this past Sunday night.  It marked her third overall win of 2008.
Paul Parker won his first ever FASTRAK Late Model feature event while it was defending Speedzone street stock champion Jerry Winkler finding victory lane in that division.  The 20-lap Grand National feature race was taken home by Troy Weich while a curfew shortened Dirt Devil win went to Chirs Quaintance.
Run under clear skies but with cool temperatures the largest crowd of the young season saw 103 machines turn out for competition led by 30 in the modified class.  There were 28 street stocks, 17 Grand Nationals, 17 Dirt Devils, and 11 late models.
Scribner would jump to the lead early in the modified finale.  Starting in the second row, Scribner made quick work of the front row duo of Kyle Lentz and Jeremy Christians.
The yellow waved for the first time officially on lap one when M.J. Hintz spun in turn two.  Back to the green, Scribner pulled away from Lentz and Christians.  McDermid found her way to fourth after starting in the sixth spot by lap four.  She would move into the runner-up spot two laps later with 10th starting Wedelstadt following her through to third.
Roger Van Roy brought the field under caution with a spin on the eighth lap.  Just a single lap could be run before the third yellow, this one for John Schultz, came out.  The restart following that caution proved to be the turning point of the race.
Trying to hold off both McDermid and Wedelstadt, Scribner raced hard into turn one in the middle of the track only to see both cars split around his.  McDermid would gain the lead with Wedelstadt racing to second.
Two more caution flags, one for a spin by Van Roy and the other for debris, did not slow McDermid as she drove to a four car length win.  Wedelstadt was second followed by Scribner, Jay Schraufnagel, and Dennis Schultz.
The second half of the top 10 included Brandon Czarapata, Hintz, Christians, Jamie Schmidt, and Joey Jaeger.
Dave Fieber led the late model feature race from the drop of the green flag.  Starting from the pole, Fieber got the jump on Ron Paulik and Jay Crichton and quickly drove away.
Parker, who started sixth, would make his move into the third spot by lap six.  It would be a caution flag on the seventh lap when Paulick spun, that gave Parker a shot at Fieber.
Running a much higher line than the leader, Parker swept past Fieber as the field completed 11 laps and never looked back in a dominating performance.
Joe Reuter made a last lap pass on Fieber to take home second place money.  Scott Lewis and Craig Bartz completed the top five.
For the first 10 laps of the Grand National feature it appeared as though Will Schumacher had the race in control.  Leading each lap, and holding off several different drivers, Schumacher saw his domination end when the yellow flew for a crash in turn four involving Jason Fish, who was running third, Tim Doehling, and Scott Houpt.
On the restart Weich drove to the outside of Schumacher and took command of the race.  Schumacher would hold off Terry Van Roy and finish in the second spot.  Brian Henry came home fourth over Dion Wahl.
Don Schumacher, Paul Tod, Gary Neau, Brian Monday, and Nick Schumacher finished out the first 10.
Winkler won the street stock main event after starting in the second row and surviving a series of caution flags.  Steve Gawaresky finished in second after he got around Tim Reichenberger with a last lap pass for runner-up money.
Jerry Kope finished fourth over Brian Drexler.
Racing action continues at the Oshkosh Speedzone on Friday night, May 30th, with a full program in all five divisions.  The first green flag is set for 7:00 pm.  The track is located just south of Highway 41 on Highway 76 at the Sunnyview Expo Grounds.
