First Cars On The Track at Oshkosh as Snow Shortens Pre-Season Practice!
Oshkosh, WI, April 21, 2013 – It was a test of wills on Sunday Afternoon between Mother Nature and the competitors at Oshkosh Speedzone Raceway seeking to shake down their rides in anticipation of the start of the 2013 racing season next Friday Night.
Nearly 50 race teams appeared to take to the third-mile clay oval on a day which saw a continuation of winter like weather with temperatures not even breaking the 40 degree mark.
The track itself was in excellent shape as a full day of practice was set to take place. Unfortunately heavy snow showers hit the raceway with two hours left in practice creating a bizarre scene of cars racing on the track in the midst of a mini-snow storm. The surface soon became too slick however and cars returned to the pit area.
Pit gates had opened at 9:00am and the first cars hit the track just after 10am and soon a steady stream of cars were testing the racing surface. In addition to cars representing each of the tracks five weekly divisions several late models were on hand and a lone sprint car as teams took advantage of the opportunity to shake down their cars.
The Hansel Trucking IMCA Northern Sport Modifieds had the highest representation with over a dozen cars on hand. Young guns Colten Von Hierden, Jon Schultz, Hunter Larson and Brock Saunders were on hand to challenge vets like Todd Weise and Rob Charapata with no clear cut answer as to just who had the fastest equipment.
The Automotive Supply Company IMCA Modifieds also had a good turnout of drivers participating in the practice including last year’s point runner-up Tim Lemirande and perennial front runners Eddie Muensters and Jeremy Christians. Chris Engels who has missed most of last season will have his own ride in 2013 seeking to reach the top five in points where he had been accustomed to running and quickly adjusted to his new machine.
Outlaw Chassis Grand Nationals were represented by a handful of cars as were the Ellington Mutual Insurance Dirt Devils with several rookies taking their first cautious laps around the track. The Total Power Sales Street Stocks were also on hand represented by a few participants.
In unofficial clocking the fastest cars to hit the surface today were the WDLMA Late Models of Russ Scheffler and Pete Parker who turned in lap times within a half second of the IRA Outlaw Sprint Car which was piloted by Mike Kertscher.
Attention now turns to the first race event.
