Oshkosh, WI, April 15, 2012: It has been a long six months since the roar of racing engines was last heard at the Oshkosh Speedzone Raceway. But that's soon to change as a pair of pre-season practice sessions will allow drivers to shake down their machinery in anticipation of the 2012 racing season.
A mild spring had allowed track officials to prepare the grounds and the raceway for the season ahead with many projects running well ahead of schedule. The track has also been prepared and is basically in "race ready" condition for the season ahead.
On Saturday, April 21st the pit gates will open at 11:00am and the first race teams will enter the pit area for an afternoon practice session that will run from Noon until 4:00pm. During that time, any car which meets minimum safety requirements may take to the track and sling some clay for the first time this season.
In addition to the regular five weekly divisions which include Automotive Supply Company Modifieds, Miller Lite Grand Nationals, Leon's Frozen Custard IMCA Northern Sport Modifieds, Total Power Sales Street Stocks and Lynn's Service Center 4 Cylinders cars with a roll cage, fuels cells and safety harnesses may turn laps on the third-mile clay oval.
In the past this has included area Late Models, IMCA Stock Cars, and even some area Sprint Cars as teams prepare their equipment for the season ahead.
Pit admission for the practice session is $15, while fans are invited to attend the practice and sit in the grandstand area at no charge.
In 2011 a total of 76 cars participated in the first practice session of the season.
The day will also mark the final day to earn 5 bonus points toward the 2012 track championship for four of the five weekly divisions. Only the Leon's Frozen Custard IMCA Northern Sport Modifieds which adhere to the IMCA point system do not earn bonus or heat race points in 2012.
In effort to be prepared for the incoming onslaught of new cars and drivers, track officials are awarding the 5 bonus points to drivers who fill out and turn in their completed drivers information sheet before April 22nd.
The information sheet contains all the information needed for the track office, it's scoring staff and the media center. The information on the sheet includes all the drivers sponsors and background information which is also used by the track announcer and the for the tracks mobile phone app.
The form can be completed online and then saved or printed. If saved it can be e-mailed to email@example.com. If printed it can be sent to Oshkosh Speedzone Raceway at 2230 Plymouth St. Oshkosh, WI 54901.
A second pre-season practice session will take place on Saturday, April 28th. Again the pit gates will open at 11:00am with practice from Noon until 4:00pm.
The season will officially get underway on Friday May 4, 2011 with racing starting at 7:00pm. The event is sponsored by WXMM 92.9fm Country radio and will feature all five weekly divisions including the Automotive Supply Company Modifieds, Miller Lite Grand Nationals, Leon's Frozen Custard IMCA Northern Sport Modifieds, Total Power Sales Street Stocks and Lynn's Service Center 4 Cylinders.
Adult admission tickets are just $10, students ages 11 through 15 are admitted for just $5 and children 10 and under are free to attend the races.
