Practice Finally Beats the Weather

The day started out wet and gloomy and ended dry and sunny. The Oshkosh Speedzone held their season opening practice. With the rain that fell on Friday, over an inch, hopes of a practice was dim. The track prep crew, Mike Rabe Construction and Trucking, suggested we put the pit area in the main parking lot and they would work on getting the track ready for practice. So the practice was on, and for many drivers this was going to be their only chance to shake the bugs out of their cars.

Cars started rolling in around 10:00. With the Speedzone teching crew working diligently to get cars safety inspected so they could go and practice, they did a top notch job of getting the cars inspected in a timely matter.

With over 70 cars in the pit area the track opened for practice at noon. Taking to the track were 25 Modifieds, 18 Grand Nationals, 17 Street Stocks, 5 4 Cylinders, 4 INEX Legends, 4 Sport Mods, 2 Late Models and 1 Vintage Mod.

The track started tacky smooth and ended smooth dry slick. The track allowed some of the drivers to try different set ups. After talking to some of the drivers after practice, Street Stock Champion Tim Reichenberger, who now moved up to Grand Nationals for the 2010 season said he was excited to practice and see how the new car handled and the track was awesome.

The crew of the Speedzone is setting their sights on a bigger and better season. With the Budweiser Triple Crown IRA Outlaw Sprint Cars, Traxis Torc Pro Off-Road Championship Series and many other specials and weekly events 2010 looks to be a great year.

The season opener is slated for May 7, 2010 with 105.7 WAPL and Citizens First Credit Union kicking off the race season. Pit gates open at 4:00pm, grandstands at 5:00pm with racing to start at 6:30pm. Adults $10.00, students 11-15 $5.00, 10 and under free with a paid adult.
