June 17, 2012; Oshkosh, WI - It's wide, it's fast, and it's about to be visited by 900 horsepower winged invaders! The Oshkosh Speedzone Raceway will play host to the Bumper to Bumper IRA Sprint Cars this Friday evening June 22nd. The 1/3 mile clay oval is known for its ample supply of racing room, where the turns provide space for three and four wide racing. The sweeping turns allow for the 410 winged sprints to approach 120 mph providing fans with some of the best side by side racing that can be found.
Budweiser will be the presenting sponsor of the show and a field of nearly 30 sprint cars is expected for the June 22nd event. Last season A-main wins at Oshkosh Speedzone Raceway went to Bill Balog and Mike Kertscher. Other top contenders include Mike Reinke who has one event win to his credit so far in 2012 sits a mere four points behind Balog in the title chase. Reinke narrowly missed winning the event at Beaver Dam last week finishing runner-up to Kertscher after being passed on the final lap of the contest. Reinke is primed for another win. Two-time series champion Scott Neitzel should also factor into those leading the charge for the checkered flag come Friday Night.
Other top ten drivers expected to give the event at Oshkosh Speedzone a shot include Tommy Sexton, Phillip Mock, Russel Borland, Kris Spitz, leading series rookie Robbie Pribnow and Scott Uttech.
The current track record stands at 11.658 seconds a mark which has stood for nearly a decade. So far this season the Bumper to Bumper IRA Outlaw Sprints have rewritten two track records. Could Oshkosh be a third?
In addition to the Bumper to Bumper IRA Outlaw Sprints the tracks own Automotive Supply Modified division will be on hand. Known as "Wisconsin's Modified Action Track" the Oshkosh Speedzone has averaged nearly 40 cars a week in the class. Some the states finest Modified pilots have taken to the track. 64 different drivers have competed in the division so far this year and that number is already higher than the total of 62 from the entire 2011 season.
Currently Brian Mullen heads up the standings by 25 points over defending track champion Brian Drexler. Both drivers have yet to visit victory lane in 2012. Third place point earner Mike Mullen has visited victory lane most often collecting three wins. Mike Wedelstadt and Tim Lemirande round out the current top five in the point standings.
The Leon's Frozen Custard IMCA Northern Sport Modifieds will also be on hand for the race program. The past three weeks has seen division point leader Tracy Wassenberg tighten his grip on victory lane having won three straight feature establishing a record for the class. Could a fourth straight win be coming up this Friday? Sport mod hot shoes Ryan Besaw, Troy Jerovetz, Kurt Moeller, Todd Weise and Kelsy Hayes are near the top of the standings and the prime suspects to steal a win from Wassenberg.
It will be a full point program for both Modified classes. Racing will start at 7:00pm for this special event.
Adult admission is just $20.00. Students ages 11 through 15 are admitted for $10.00 and children 10 and under are admitted free. For additional information consult the track website at www.oshkoshspeedzone.net
