Despite the nice weather for
doing yard work and spring cleaning there was a steady stream of race
fans stopping by all day long to see the cars on display. The buzz
around the show at Ricoshay's Tap in Oshkosh was the anticipation of the
new beginning of the Speedzone Raceway! From young & old
alike, everyone seemed to have the bug to get back to racing after a
long cold winter. Fans felt at home at Ricoshay's from being
greeted by a 9' wood chainsaw carving of Dale Earnhardt to sampling the
"Speedzone Back Stretch Cheeseburgers" fresh from the grill.
With just 2
weekend till opening night, many racers were busy wrenching on their cars and
were unable to make the show. Although, there was just enough cars to give
fans a taste of what is to come.
There was 3 of the 5 divisions that race at the Speedzone represented at the
car show. The # 77 Grand National of Dion Wahl, the # 11 Mod of Travis
Spaulding, the # 9 Street Stock of Franky Formiller. It seemed as though
all three entries were going to go home happy with a trophy and a lot of
exposure for their sponsors. Then Mark Schultz showed up with his # 70
Street Stock and stole the show, with his 1970 orange Chevelle! He went
on to take first place after taking a lot of fans back to the days of Leo's
Speedway. Mark's car sparked hour of discussion on the good old
days of racing at the old fairgrounds in Oshkosh... It's fun to listen
to the old stories from those who attended the the races back
then. As the day continued many fans won some great door prizes in
between all the talk of the upcoming season. Yes, the show was a
success, people had a great time, renewed old friendships & others
created new ones! However what would a racecar show be with out a
little burning rubber? Yes, that's right... we had a couple race
fans who wanted to burn a little rubber in the parking lot of Ricoshay!
We don't recommend this to all race fans... as tires are expensive! But
here are a couple of photos from the parking lot burn outs. Notice
the Speedzone Pace Truck getting in on the action!
